Graduate Healthcare Administration Training Program (GHATP)
The Veteran’s Health Administration offers the GHATP as a supplement to healthcare administration master’s programs. This internship is open to those who have completed the didactic portion of the master’s program and are within 12 months of graduation. The program is also open to individuals who have graduated with a master’s degree in the last two years. This deadline is extended to six years for veterans. Approximately 50 individuals are selected to take part in this internship program, giving them valuable firsthand experience in a hospital setting. GHATP internships are also paid.
Mount Sinai Department of Surgery Administrative Internship Program
The Mount Sinai Department of Surgery offers an administrative internship program for students who are pursuing a master’s degree in healthcare administration. The Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai is one of the top academic medical facilities in the country. During the 8–12 week program, participants work on a number of projects in the areas of administration, human resources, financial management, research, marketing and more. This variation in workload will provide interns with valuable experiences that put their education to practical use.
Those who are interested in applying for this unpaid internship must submit a statement of career goals, a current resume, two letters of recommendation and a current transcript.
The World Health Organization (WHO) offers a limited number of healthcare administration internships. These internship opportunities are located throughout the world, giving individuals who are seeking a master’s in healthcare administration the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the field. These internships are not paid, and participants usually pay for all expenses, including travel. However, in some situations, a master’s program may pay for travel or living expenses. This internship typically lasts 6–12 weeks, though extensions may be available up to 24 weeks due to academic or program need.
Students may only participate in this internship program once and must have a valid passport and medical insurance coverage throughout the internship period. Applications for this program are only accepted during the summer and winter. Those who complete the internship program may not work directly for WHO until three months have passed.
University of North Carolina Administrative Internship Program
The UNC Health Care System offers an administrative internship program for individuals who are actively enrolled in healthcare administration master’s programs. This paid internship lasts for 12 weeks during the summer months and immerses interns in the operations of the department of their choice. Participants in the program will gain valuable work experience at a world-class facility, culminating in a presentation to showcase what each participant has learned.
To be eligible for this program, students must have at least one semester of coursework completed, be eligible for employment in the United States and have at least a 3.0 GPA. Applicants may choose an area of focus, including finance, human resources, operations, marketing and strategic planning. Applications may be submitted online from early November through early December. Orientation begins in mid-May for accepted individuals.
Northwestern Memorial Hospital Graduate Administrative Internship Program
Northwestern Memorial Hospital offers internships to students who are enrolled in healthcare administration master’s programs. This eight-week program takes place during the summer months. It begins with an orientation and continues with group projects to give interns practical experience that builds on their coursework. The primary focus of this program is to improve patient care and enhance the skills and knowledge necessary to work in this field.
Individuals who are enrolled in a master’s program for healthcare administration are eligible for this internship opportunity. Enrollment in the program begins in mid-October for the following summer. Interested individuals must apply directly to the hospital.
